UPTON, NY - Anurag Acharya, Distinguished Engineer at Google, will give a talk titled, "Searching Scholarly Literature: A Google Scholar Perspective," in Berkner Hall at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory on Monday, December 5, at 11 a.m. Sponsored by Brookhaven Science Associates, the company that manages Brookhaven Lab, the talk is free and open to the public. All visitors to the Laboratory age 16 and over must bring a photo ID.
Used by researchers all over the world, the Internet search engine called Google Scholar is a fresh approach to discovering and accessing scholarly literature. In his talk, Acharya will describe the key challenges that Google overcame in designing the search engine and the general principles that underlie its design. He also will describe Google Scholar's collaborations with libraries to increase visibility of their vast repositories.
Anurag Acharya earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, in 1987, and a Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University, in 1994. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Maryland at College Park from 1995 to 1997, before he became an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, a position he held until he joined Google.
