UPTON, NY - Composer and pianist Peter Winkler will join bassoonist Gili Sharett in concert at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory on Wednesday, December 14, at noon in Berkner Hall. Sponsored by Brookhaven Science Associates, the company that manages Brookhaven Lab, the concert is free and open to the public. All visitors to the Laboratory age 16 and over must bring a photo ID.
The program will include Winkler's composition called "Gili's Music," which highlights Gili Sharett's influences, from Baroque music to her Israeli origins. Also included in the program will be a sonata by Mozart, a rag by Winkler, and a tango by Astor Piazolla.
A music professor at Stony Brook University, Peter Winkler composes both concert and theater music. Many of his pieces include a mix of popular and classical styles. Among his recent pieces are "Returning to the Root" for horn and piano, which won honorable mention at the International Horn Society Composition Competition; "A Midsummer Overture," for the Midsummer Musical Retreat in Washington State; and "Partita for Baroque Ensemble," for the Stony Brook Baroque Players.
Bassoonist Gili Sharett received her bachelor's degree in music from the Rubin Academy of Music in Tel Aviv, Israel, and she earned a Ph.D. in musical arts from Stony Brook University. She debuted as a soloist at Carnegie Hall in 2004, and she has performed in major concert halls throughout the world. She currently plays in the orchestra for Lincoln Center's Tony-award winning play, The Light in the Piazza, and she is a member of Ariel Winds, an all-female woodwind quintet that performs extensively in major venues throughout the U.S. Since 2002, she has been a faculty member of the Brevard Music Center, a summer music institute in North Carolina.
