Sponsored by Brookhaven Science Associates, the fast-paced question-and-answer tournament was designed to test high school students' knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy, earth science, and general science.

The Regional Science Bowl at Brookhaven, along with 64 others around the country, is part of the National Science Bowl® competition coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. Since its inception in 1991, more than 100,000 high school students have participated in this "Jeopardy"-style contest. By competing in Science Bowl contests, students are encouraged to excel in science and math and to pursue careers in those fields.

Eighteen schools from Long Island and the New York metropolitan area participated in the regional competition this year. As the first-place winner, the Ward Melville team received $500 in gift certificates, and the team will get a chance to participate in the National Science Bowl®, which will be held in Chevy Chase, Maryland, from April 27 to May1, 2006. For the second consecutive year, second-place honors went to Half Hollow Hills West, who won $250; Elwood-John Glenn High School placed third, winning $125; and William Floyd High School came in fourth, winning $75. All four winning teams received a trophy or plaque.
