Brookhaven Town Honors Two Brookhaven Lab Women

UPTON, NY - Two women who work at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory - Angela Lauria Baumann and Jill Clough-Johnston - will be honored for their accomplishments at the Brookhaven Town-sponsored Women's Recognition Night at The Meadow Club in Port Jefferson on March 23. They are among twelve women to be honored for contributions to various fields in a ceremony to celebrate National Women's History Month.

Since 2003, Brookhaven Lab has benefited from Angela Lauria Baumann's expertise in medical ethics, as she has served simultaneously as a volunteer in the Laboratory's Medical Department in three positions: Quality Assurance Physician for Human Research, and Chair of both the Credentialing Committee and the Quality Assurance Committee. At the Laboratory, Baumann works with scientists to develop ethically responsible protocols that respect the rights of subjects in medical research. She also verifies that all research is conducted by fully qualified and trained personnel and in accordance with federal and state regulations and good clinical practices. In addition, Baumann is a voluntary Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Stony Brook University, and an instructor for a course on "Medicine and Contemporary Society" at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine.

After graduating from St. Vincent's Hospital nursing school, where Baumann worked in one of New York City's first intensive care units, she continued her career as a registered nurse in the Cardiovascular Critical Care Facility at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, NY. When she was 31 years old, she attended college for the first time with the goal of becoming a physician. In 1985, she received her D.O. from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency in anesthesiology at Stony Brook University and then practiced in several hospitals, both academic and private, for about ten years before she had to give up active practice due to medical problems. In 1997, Baumann had an opportunity to pursue a lifelong interest in bioethics, which she studied, along with medical humanities, at Columbia University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

"I am honored and humbled to be recognized by Brookhaven Town's Office of Women's Services," Baumann said. "Women often have interrupted career paths to fulfill family and other responsibilities, but hurdles can be overcome. I had the opportunity to go to college for the first time at 31, and I ultimately achieved my goal of becoming a physician in my early 40s, in great part because I was blessed with a supportive family. I hope my experience will encourage other women to pursue their goals, no matter what their age. The challenge is to be curious always and to have vision."

Jill Clough-Johnston is Brookhaven Lab's Small Business Liaison Officer. In that position, she directs and administers the Laboratory's small business program in accordance with its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). DOE sets subcontract procurement goals for small businesses that Clough-Johnston strives to achieve, and, in most instances, she has exceeded those goals. For example, in fiscal year 2005, which runs from October 1, 2004, to September 30, 2005, the percentage of procurement dollars spent on women-owned businesses was expected to be at least five percent, but Clough-Johnston exceeded that goal, spending 11 percent on women-owned businesses.

Currently, Clough-Johnston is planning a small-business procurement fair to be held at Brookhaven Lab on April 28, where small businesses will be able to market directly to many of Long Island's large businesses. She is an active member of the Brookhaven Small Business Advisory Council - a Brookhaven Town volunteer group that helps small businesses within the Town - and she keeps up with women business owners as an adjunct member of the Suffolk County Women's Business Enterprise Coalition. In her spare time, as a volunteer with Long Island Youth Ministries, she mentors a 12-year-old girl.

"I appreciate this honor from Brookhaven Town," said Clough-Johnston. "I love my job at Brookhaven Lab, and I enjoy working with small business owners. I am also very dedicated to my church, and I find it gratifying to be a mentor for a young girl in my community."

Clough-Johnston held several administrative positions on Long Island, including with Grumman Aerospace Corporation, before she earned a B.S. in business administration from Adelphi University in 1986. She then held subcontract administrator positions at several defense companies in the metropolitan New York area before she joined the Long Island Development Corporation in Bethpage, where she was a procurement specialist and assistant director. She came to Brookhaven Lab in 2003.
