Women in Science Career Day Held at Brookhaven Lab

UPTON, NY - Thirty-five female students from three East End high schools - Bridgehampton, Riverhead and Westhampton Beach - attended a career day at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, where they learned about careers in science and related technical fields. Funded by Brookhaven Science Associates, the company that manages Brookhaven Lab, the event was coordinated by Brookhaven Women in Science, a Brookhaven Lab-based nonprofit organization that promotes the advancement of women in scientific fields.

The students learned about the world-class research at Brookhaven Lab that has garnered six Nobel Prizes and led to numerous technologies that have improved everyday life. Among the Brookhaven Lab women employees who addressed the girls were a physicist, a materials scientist, a biologist, engineers, and a science writer. The girls also were treated to tours of Brookhaven's National Synchrotron Light Source, where researchers from around the world use x-rays, ultraviolet light, and infrared light to study materials as diverse as computer chips and viruses; and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, where physicists are discovering what matter was like at the beginning of the universe.
