Talk on Effects of Space Radiation and Exploring the Moon at Huntington Public Library, 11/14

UPTON, NY - Marcelo Vazquez, a medical guest scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, will give a talk titled "Back to the Future: How We Plan to Return to the Moon" at the Huntington Public Library on Tuesday, November 14, at 7:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Science Club of Long Island, the talk is free and open to the public. Vazquez will discuss the research under way at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory at Brookhaven Lab. Using beams of heavy ions from Brookhaven's Booster accelerator, the $34-million facility can simulate the harsh cosmic and solar radiation environment found in space. Research at the facility into the biological effects of space radiation will help assess risks to astronauts so that adequate preventive measures can be designed. Vazquez will explain NASA's plans to send astronauts to the moon and beyond, and how research at the Brookhaven-NASA facility will help to make the mission possible.
Marcelo Vazquez earned an M.D. and Ph.D. from the National University of La Plata, Argentina, where he was born and raised. After conducting postdoctoral research at Uppsala University in Sweden, he served as a research scientist at Columbia University before joining Brookhaven Lab in 1995. As of November 1, Vazquez will be joining the Baylor College of Medicine to work for the National Space Biomedical Research Institute and NASA, integrating scientific programs related to NASA's new "Vision of Space Exploration."
