Commack Middle School Wins Science Bowl at Brookhaven Lab
Robert Cushman Murphy Junior High School Takes Second Place in Science Bowl and First Place in Hydrogen Car Challenge
April 18, 2007
UPTON, NY - A Commack Middle School team won first place in the Regional Middle School Science Bowl held April 14 at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. One hundred students from eleven Long Island middle schools participated in the fast-paced question-and-answer tournament designed to test students' knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy, earth science, and general science.

A team from Robert Cushman Murphy Junior High School of Stony Brook took second place in the academic contest, and another team from that school captured first place in the Science Bowl's hydrogen fuel-cell model car competition, in which students design, build and race model cars. The team's car took 9.98 seconds to race down a ten-meter track. A Bellport Middle School team placed second in the model car competition, sending their car down the track in 10.14 seconds.
Teams from Longwood Junior High School in Middle Island placed third in both the academic and model car competitions. The team's model car traversed the track in 12.40 seconds. A Rocky Point Middle School team came in fourth in the academic competition.
The Regional Science Bowl at Brookhaven Lab is part of the National Science Bowl® competition coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. In 2006, more than 2,500 students participated in 31 regional events throughout the nation. By participating in this "Jeopardy"-style academic contest and model hydrogen fuel-cell car competition, students are encouraged to excel in science and math and to pursue careers in those fields.
Each student in the winning teams received a medal, and each winning team received a trophy for their school. The Commack Middle School will represent the Long Island region in the National Science Bowl®, which will be held in Denver, Colorado, from June 21-24, 2007. The U.S. Department of Energy will fund the team's all-expense-paid trip.
