Brookhaven Lab Open to Public on Summer Sundays, July 8 - August 19

UPTON, NY - The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory will again open its doors to the public this summer, every Sunday from July 8 through August 19. The Laboratory will feature a different tour each week, including a visit to its newest facility, the Center for Functional Nanomaterials, on July 22. Both adults and children can enjoy a variety of entertaining activities, including the Whiz Bang Science Show and the Brain Teasers exhibit each week. Celebrate the Laboratory's sixtieth anniversary, and collect commemorative souvenirs while supplies last.
Summer Sundays are offered free of charge, and no reservations are needed. Visitors may arrive any time between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The Whiz Bang Science Show will be staged at 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. each Sunday. All visitors age 16 and over must bring a photo ID.

July 8 - Life Sciences - Investigate the Living World
Explore the fascinating world of biological and biomedical research. See how scientists use imaging devices to study addiction and its effects on the brain. Learn about DNA sequencing and the Scanning Transmission Microscope, a super-powerful microscope that allows scientists to see the intricate details of living organisms. Discover how a molecule's structure is determined with x-ray crystallography, and enjoy hands-on activities. On this Sunday only, enjoy a cultural celebration with music, dance and more.
July 15 - See with Invisible Light
Powerful beams of invisible light help scientists make remarkable discoveries that can impact our everyday life. The National Synchrotron Light Source is one of the world's brightest sources of x-ray, infrared and ultraviolet light. Used by over 2,000 researchers from around the world each year, the Light Source has contributed to advances in medicine, materials, space travel, and more. Tour the facility, enjoy hands-on activities, and take a quiz to win a prize.
July 22 - Explore the New Nanocenter
Visit the Lab's Center for Functional Nanomaterials, just opened this May, where studies of the ultra-small may lead to ultra-big discoveries. About 350 scientists from Brookhaven Lab, the northeastern U.S., and other parts of the world will use the center's unique array of high-tech tools to explore and develop nanoscale materials, on the order of billionths of a meter, to help the U.S. achieve energy independence. See state-of-the-art labs where researchers perform cutting-edge research.
July 29 - Hands-On Fun with Science
Capture your shadow, see yourself in the mirror exhibit, and enjoy hands-on fun at the Laboratory's Science Learning Center. Learn about the Lab's educational programs, and visit the Long Island ScienCenter display.
August 5 - Visit the Firehouse & Learn About Safety
Tour the Laboratory's firehouse and climb aboard construction equipment. Meet the people who make Brookhaven Lab safe and secure. Learn about safety in your home, through activities for all ages.
August 12 - Learn about the Weather at the National Weather Service
Are you prepared for the hurricane season? Learn about weather - what creates it, how it is tracked, and how to be ready for it - at the National Weather Service, located on the Laboratory site. A weather balloon will be launched for visitors to view at 3:30 p.m.
August 19 - A Perfect Liquid Discovered at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
What do you get when you smash two beams of gold particles moving at 99.9 percent of the speed of light? Using three-story tall detectors at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), scientists have identified a state of matter that existed in the first millionth of a second after the Big Bang. It's a perfect liquid - a scientific surprise. A visit to RHIC will surely be memorable.
