Stony Brook Opera Presents Excerpts from "Romeo and Juliet" At Brookhaven Lab, December 12
November 15, 2007
UPTON, NY - On Wednesday, December 12, at 12 noon in Berkner Hall, Stony Brook Opera will present excerpts from Bellini's opera "I Capuleti ed i Montecchi," which is based on the story of Romeo and Juliet. Sponsored by Brookhaven Science Associates, the company that manages Brookhaven Lab, the concert is free and open to the public. All visitors to the Laboratory age 16 and over must bring a photo ID.
The opera is scored for only five characters and includes glorious melodies. All of Act I and the final scene of Act II will be presented from David Lawton's abridged version of the opera and will be sung in the original Italian, with projected titles in English.
The singers are advanced graduate students in the Department of Music at Stony Brook University. They will perform from memory and move on stage just as they would in a full production, but there will be no sets or costumes, allowing the singers and the audience to focus completely on the music, the words, and the acting. The accompanying pianists are advanced doctoral students. The performance is conducted by Jeffrey Francom and directed by Andrew Frank.
Call 631 344-2345 for more information. The Laboratory is located on William Floyd Parkway (County Road 46), one-and-a-half miles north of Exit 68 of the Long Island Expressway.
