Stony Brook Opera to Perform Two One-Act Operas at Brookhaven Lab, April 23

Stony Brook Opera will perform a semi-staged preview of two one-act chamber operas — Dominick Argento's The Boor and Lee Hoiby's The Scarf — at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at noon in Berkner Hall. Sponsored by Brookhaven Science Associates, the company that manages Brookhaven Lab, the concert is free and open to the public. All visitors to the Laboratory age 16 and over must bring a photo ID.

The two operas, in addition to being based upon stories or plays by Anton Chekhov, are intimate works scored for a chamber orchestra with small casts.

Contemporary American composers Argento and Hoiby are among the most highly respected and successful living opera composers. The two write in an accessible musical style, with thoroughly natural and idiomatic expression for the voice and a real flair for the theatre. Argento's opera, The Boor, is a romantic comedy, whereas Hoiby's, The Scarf, is a powerful tragedy centered around a love triangle.

Call 631 344-2345 for more information. The Laboratory is located on William Floyd Parkway (County Road 46), one-and-a-half miles north of Exit 68 of the Long Island Expressway.
