Brookhaven Lab to Host Residential Energy Conservation Forum, June 26

EVENT: The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory will host a public forum for homeowners on how to reduce energy usage in the home. Featured speakers include representatives from Long Island Power Authority, Renewable Energy Long Island, and Brookhaven Lab. Media are invited to attend this forum. All visitors age 16 and older must bring a photo ID to be allowed on site.

WHERE: Berkner Hall, Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Lab is located on William Floyd Parkway (County Road 46), one-and-a-half miles north of Exit 68 of the Long Island Expressway.

DETAILS: Brookhaven Lab is sponsoring a Residential Energy Conservation Forum on Thursday, June 26, at 5 p.m. This forum will feature speakers who will provide homeowners with valuable information and insight as they explore cost-effective, efficient solutions for reducing energy usage. After the presentations, attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session.

Featured Speakers

  • David Beaulieu, Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), will discuss low-tech, cost-effective, energy-saving solutions such as insulation, air-sealing, and thermo pane windows that should be considered prior to higher tech/higher cost changes in the home. Beaulieu will also discuss LIPA's home energy assessment.
  • Thomas Butcher, Brookhaven Lab, will discuss ways to achieve very high efficiency with integrated hot water heating systems. Butcher will also present a free web-based tool that provides a fuel savings calculator, developed through work at the Lab.
  • Roger McDonald, Brookhaven Lab, will discuss current state-of-the-art wood stoves and what the efficiency numbers mean.
  • Gordian Raacke, Renewable Energy Long Island, will discuss the potential to harness the power of the sun and reduce home energy use by up to 40 percent. Raacke will also include a discussion of LIPA cash rebates and other incentives available through LIPA's Solar Pioneer & Home Performance with ENERGY STAR programs.
