UPTON, NY — Kitka, a grassroots group of singers from diverse ethnic and musical backgrounds, will perform in concert U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory on January 28, 2009, at noon, in Berkner Hall. Sponsored by Brookhaven Science Associates, the company that manages Brookhaven Lab, the concert is free and open to the public. All visitors to the Laboratory age 16 and over must bring a photo ID.

Kitka, meaning “bouquet” in Bulgarian and Macedonian, began in 1979. Kitka musicians share a passion for the stunning dissonances, asymmetric rhythms, intricate ornamentation and lush harmonies of Eastern European women’s vocal traditions. The group, based in Oakland, CA, has evolved into a professional touring ensemble that has earned international recognition for its artistry, versatility, and fresh approach to traditional material. With deep ties to Eastern Europe, Kitka has collected repertoire and performed there many times.

In 2002, Kitka joined Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares as “international guests of honor” for this world-renowned choir’s 50th Anniversary Gala at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, Bulgaria. In 2005, Kitka journeyed to Ukraine for a series of performances, international artist-exchange meetings, radio and television broadcasts, and research expeditions in rural villages. Kitka’s work in Ukraine created such a stir that the ensemble was invited back in 2007 for a performance in Kiev’s most prestigious concert hall, the Palace “Ukrainia.” For the recital at Brookhaven Lab, Kitka has chosen a program that includes Balkan, Slavic, Georgian and Armenian folk music.
