From Ant Control to Wind Energy – Winning Projects at Brookhaven Lab’s Science Fair

UPTON, NY – More than 500 science projects from 114 Suffolk County schools were entered in the 2009 Elementary School Science Fair, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Laboratory’s Office of Educational Programs coordinated the fair, which was held at the Laboratory on May 2. Brookhaven scientists and local elementary school teachers judged the projects.

The winners are:

Olivia O’Hara, kindergarten, West Babylon School District, for her project titled “Natural Ant Control.”



Emma Claps, first grade, Hauppauge School District, “Are Icicles Clean?”



Ricky Frosch, second grade, Connetquot School District, “Hockey – A ‘Cool’ Sport.”



Jennie Dworkin, third grade, Northport-East Northport School District, “Lefty-Righty.”



Haley Lindell, fourth grade, Shoreham-Wading River Central School District, “Packing for Posture.”



Dalila Diamond, fifth grade, The Laurel Hill School (private), “The Green Machine: Wind Energy.”



Pierce Field, sixth grade, William Floyd School District, “How Do Different Oil Patterns Affect Your Bowling Game?”
