Brilliant Light, Dazzling Discoveries: Visit NSLS-II on July 21

Tour the source of some of the world's brightest x-rays, the National Synchrotron Light Source II

Ad for Brilliant Light, Dazzling Discoveries

Every year, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory opens its gates to thousands of community members for its annual open house events, called Summer Sundays. Visitors get to meet the Lab’s scientists and tour a different world-class science facility each week, including the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, the National Synchrotron Light Source II, and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials. Exciting science shows and hands-on educational activities are also available for the whole family, and it’s all for free!

This summer, Brookhaven Lab is open on Sundays July 14 through August 4. This Sunday will be the summer’s second event: Brilliant Light, Dazzling Discoveries.

Come tour the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), where scientists use ultrabright x-rays to “see” inside materials like batteries and proteins, down to single atoms! NSLS-II is a giant x-ray microscope so big that Yankee Stadium can fit inside of it! Visitors can choose to take a short tour or a long tour of its half-mile ring.

Younger visitors can participate in hands-on science fun at our interactive stations: become an NSLS-II junior operator, build a candy crystal, and play with water rockets. Our scientists will also be performing exciting demonstrations with liquid nitrogen. This week’s science show is the Science Spectacular Laser Light Show. Delve into the mysteries of light, color, and perception in an exciting laser light show that proves science is cool.

Brookhaven scientist and electrical engineer Shaorui Li will also give an informative and engaging talk about microelectronics and how they help us build advanced detectors at machines like NSLS-II.

Reservations are not required, but visitors 16 and older must bring a photo ID. Visitors should check in at Berkner Hall and may arrive any time between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Arrive by 2:30 p.m. for the last tour of NSLS-II. The Science Spectacular Laser Light Show will be held at noon, 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. in Berkner Hall. A cafeteria and gift shop, also located in Berkner Hall, will be open until 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
