Workshops

This series of events will bring together stakeholders from across the world to discuss topics related to R&D advances in wood heater research, specifically related to residential heating. The purpose is to engage leaders and engineers of the wood heater industry along with academics, experts and others by creating forums that they can have input to.

The workshops were designed to include short presentations around a wood heater related topic and then include an open discussion related to a topical area. Recordings of the workshop plenary sessions are can be accessed by navigating through the links below!

The Wood Heater Technology Slam competition will be hosted as a follow-up to the wood heater workshops. This competition will showcase up to ten wood heater appliance teams as they showcase their heater designs in a virtual presentation format. To apply or register for the event please navigate to the Technology Slam page and as always participation is highly encouraged.

About the Challenge

The Wood Heater Design Challenge exists to engage and expand the wood heater community; foster relationships between academia, industry and other stakeholders to develop the most innovative wood heaters that are cleaner and more efficient; and to encourage and build strong teams to compete in the Wood Heater Design Challenge coming in 2023.

Workshop 1

Advances in wood heater design and technology

January 11 & 12, 2022

Combustion science for stove R&D has developed significantly in recent decades, but what are pros and cons of these different R&D strategies?

This workshop will focus on advances in stove R&D and identify the key metrics for combustion engineers, manufacturers and other stakeholders needed to promote cleaner, more efficient heater designs.

Workshop 2

Advances in instrumentation used for wood heater testing and field data collection

March 28 & 29, 2022

Residential biomass heaters can play an important role in a future, clean energy portfolio. However, better evaluation practices are needed to inform the development of efficient biomass appliances that consistently achieve low emissions both during certification testing and in-field operation. Workshop 2 will provide a forum to share information on more accessible methods for evaluating heaters’ thermal efficiency, pollution emissions, and wider impacts on public health and the environment.

This forum will advance participants’ knowledge of upcoming test methods and tools that are key to informing targeted innovation in the heater manufacturing sector and enabling regulatory agencies to evaluate the impacts of these improved biomass appliances.

Workshop 3

Adoption of new wood heater technology and integration with other renewables

April 26 & 27, 2022

The third workshop of the Wood Heater Design Challenge discusses the adoption of new wood heater technology and integration with other renewables, delves into barriers to adoption and how wood heaters could play a more long term role as a renewable energy option.

What technologies are most likely to be incentivized? How can they interconnect with other renewables at the household level, or the community level? Where will wood heat be the most price competitive?
