Brookhaven Lab Celebrates Legacy of Dr. Mow Shiah Lin with Scholarship Opportunity

Brookhaven National Laboratory's Asian Pacific American Association (APAA) is proud to announce the call for applications for the 2024 Dr. Mow Shiah Lin Scholarship. This prestigious scholarship is dedicated to students of Asian heritage who are pursuing doctoral programs in Environmental & Energy Technology, Biology, or Chemistry on Long Island, including Queens and Brooklyn.

The scholarship, named in honor of the late Mow Shiah Lin, a distinguished scientist at Brookhaven Laboratory, offers a one-time award of $2,000 to assist with educational expenses. Lin, known for his remarkable contributions to science and technology at the Lab’s Energy Sciences and Technology Department, held nine patents, authored 85 papers, and was a recipient of the 2001 R&D 100 award among other national recognitions. His innovative work and passion for science left a lasting impact before his untimely passing in 2003.

Eligibility criteria

  • Applicants must be of Asian heritage and hold a U.S. student visa (F-1 status).
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program at an accredited institution of higher education on Long Island through at least May 2025.
  • Fields of study must include Environmental & Energy Technology, Biology, or Chemistry.

Application process 

Interested candidates are required to submit a completed application form, a 1-2 page essay detailing their educational and career goals, transcripts from the last two semesters, and two professional letters of reference. The selection committee, comprising Lab scientists and APAA members, will evaluate applicants based on their academic records, references, and the potential to contribute to their fields. The scholarship recipient will be notified by mid-August 2024 and will receive the award in September after providing proof of fall enrollment.

With the Dr. Mow Shiah Lin Scholarship, the APAA aims to support the academic and research aspirations of students who strive to make significant contributions to environmental and life sciences, echoing Lin's commitment to improving human life through science.
