NSLS-II & LBMS Welcome Mercy Baez as New User Program Coordinator

From developing next-generation batteries to laying the groundwork for the pharmaceuticals of the future, the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) and the Laboratory for BioMolecular Structure (LBMS) support scientists from all around the world by offering advanced research capabilities. However, it’s not just the right tools that these researchers need. They also need to obtain guest appointments, travel to the facilities, take the necessary training courses, figure out where they are staying, and more. All of this while they are preparing for their scientific experiments. Luckily, the researchers have an expert helping them with these logistical challenges: Mercy Baez, the new user program coordinator for NSLS-II and LBMS.
“We are very grateful that is Mercy part of our team, and we are looking forward to having her in this new role. I would like to invite everyone—staff and users—to join me in congratulating her,” said John Hill, NSLS-II director.
Baez is a familiar face to many staff members and users at NSLS-II. She has worked in the NSLS and NSLS-II User Offices since 2005. At NSLS-II, Baez has been responsible for coordinating all conferences, workshops, and training courses, including all financial and logistical aspects of the events.
“Mercy has been organizing all of the in-person and virtual workshops, conferences, and training courses at NSLS-II since its inception. She is very familiar with the needs of our users, and everyone appreciates her professionalism and cheerful personality,” said Lisa Miller, the NSLS-II User Services, Communications, Education, and Outreach Office manager.
Baez will assume her role as the new user program coordinator in October. She will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of NSLS-II and LBMS user needs including guest appointments, training, on-site access, user amenities, and more. Additionally, she will also provide support to the associated user organizations such as user executive committees.
“I am looking forward to working with our users on a closer level. As a little girl, I always dreamt about traveling the world and learning about different cultures and people. I am excited about this new role since it will allow me to interact with many users—not only to help them find their way at the facility, but also for me to learn something new from them. Also, just knowing that I will be a part of paving a way for future discoveries at our facility makes it all a little more exciting and rewarding to me,” said Baez.
In her spare time, Baez is an avid adventurer, travelling to learn about different cultures, food, and experiences. When she is not following her passion for hiking, fishing, and camping, Baez enjoys reading books.
