Summary

Current industrial methods for propene epoxidation primarily rely on the use of hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. This introduces operational and environmental hurdles due to the corrosive nature of hydrogen peroxide. In this joint invention, Brookhaven researchers described a process to selectively epoxidize propene to propene oxide thermally in the gas phase, by reacting a propene feed with molecular oxygen in the presence of an epoxidation catalyst.
