Summary
Direct conversion of methane into liquid oxygenates such as methanol can significantly reduce the cost and complexity of natural gas storage and transport, particularly when compared with indirect routes that require energy-intensive syngas (CO and H2) production. To address this challenge, researchers from Brookhaven and NYU have jointly developed a method for converting methane into methanol and methanol derivatives using an inexpensive catalytic system that combines a metal catalyst with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2).
