Face Covering Requirements
On Thursday, March 10, the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven Site Office approved the Lab's updated COVID-19 Workplace Safety and Reentry Plan. The updated plan reflects new recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) related to COVID-19 Community Levels, which measure the impact of COVID-19 illness on health and healthcare systems; guidance from the Safer Federal Workforce Task Force; and requirements from DOE.
When the CDC-designated Community Level for Suffolk County is "Medium" or "Low" (as it is currently), face coverings are not required on the Brookhaven Lab site or within Lab facilities, regardless of an individual's vaccination status.
Staff, visitors, and guests/users on site can stop wearing face coverings in nearly all indoor settings. In certain close-quarter indoor environments, face coverings will still be required—at Brookhaven this includes bathrooms and elevators (when not alone) and the Lab's Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility. Of course, anyone who would like to continue wearing a face covering can do so. Please note that if the Community Level increases to "High" at some point in the future, face coverings will be required again for everyone on site.
This change in guidance does not replace the need for personal protective equipment in medical, radiological areas, or other settings, as determined by work planning and control.
