Summary

High-temperature geothermal wells, including Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) and Superhot Rock (SHR) wells, require cementitious materials capable of maintaining long-term mechanical integrity under hydrothermal conditions exceeding 250–350oC. Conventional geothermal well construction relies primarily on Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)-based systems and, in more aggressive environments, calcium aluminate cement (CAC)-based systems. However, these materials exhibit significant limitations under extreme geothermal conditions. Brookhaven researchers have developed various cementitious materials for using in high-temperature geothermal wells.
