General Lab Information

Facilities and Infrastructure

Quantum Network Facility

The Quantum Network Facility is open to the user community to benchmark performance, validate concepts, and expedite the development of the quantum ecosystem. Experimental opportunities are focused on the development of foundational quantum devices, including entanglement generation and detection, and characterization of quantum memories with a focus on scalability.

Fabrication Cleanrooms

For more than 20 years, the Silicon Sensor Fabrication Cleanroom in Brookhaven Lab’s Instrumentation Division has been a main center for the development and production of prototype silicon (Si) radiation sensors. These in-house-developed sensors are being used across the nation and abroad in fields including nuclear and high-energy physics, photon science, and x-ray astronomy.

Irradiation Sources

Electronics and structural materials intended for use in high-energy physics experiments, space, or other environments where significant amounts of damaging radiation are present must be tested and qualified for radiation effects before they are deployed. The Instrumentation Division’s solid-state gamma-ray irradiation facility, neutron generator, and other small neutron sources provide capabilities to perform these testing and characterization studies in air.

Micro/Nanofabrication Lab

The Micro/Nanofabrication Laboratory is dedicated to the design, synthesis, processing, and characterization of components and devices at the micro- and nanoscales. Visiting experimenters are encouraged to actively participate in the design process by learning fundamental fabrication processes such as plasma etching and high-aspect-ratio lithography. Astronomy, particle physics, materials science, and biology are among the fields that we support.

Spectrum Management Capabilities

The Spectrum and Radio Communications Group oversees Brookhaven’s licensed use of the federal radio-frequency (RF) spectrum to support critical missions in national security, science, and operations. The group also manages land-mobile radio (LMR) systems to provide wireless communication for life and property protection and accelerator science, and performs electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing of electronic components.
