UPTON, NY - Joseph Indusi, Chair of the Nonproliferation and National Security Department at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, will give a talk titled "Nuclear Nonproliferation and the Role of the International Atomic Energy Agency" at Harborfields Public Library in Greenlawn, Long Island, on Thursday, September 21, at 7:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Science Club of Long Island, the talk is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required. Call the library's reference desk at (631) 757-4200 to register.

The talk will focus on national and international efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear materials. The main emphasis will be on the International Atomic Energy Agency, which won the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize, and the agency's efforts in assuring the peaceful use of nuclear materials. Indusi will discuss the need to safeguard uranium and plutonium, and he will review the measurement, accounting and physical protection systems at facilities using or storing nuclear materials.

Indusi holds a Ph.D. in applied mathematics and statistics from Stony Brook University, and he joined Brookhaven Lab in 1973. He currently oversees a staff of 60 experts, who work for the U.S. Department of Energy and other government agencies to safeguard nuclear materials throughout the world and to prevent the proliferation of nuclear and chemical weapons. In addition, since the first terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, Indusi's department has been carrying out anti-terrorism initiatives, working for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security following 9/11.
