The Outreach, Education, and Workforce Development (OEWD) Executive Committee has had several successes since the inception of this group to meet our vision of “making quantum a household name.”

We completed a 12-event lecture series to bring more awareness of C2QA, the quantum research being conducted within the Center, and the different partner roles. We hosted more than 1,000 participants from academic and other C2QA communities.

Several student opportunities are available this summer. For the high school community, Virginia Tech is leading a free Quantum Information Science and Engineering Summer School that will explore the basic principles that underlie quantum technologies to help gain an appreciation for what novel capabilities are unlocked by quantum mechanics.

Brookhaven Lab hosted a four-week C2QA Quantum Computing Summer School for approximately 40 undergraduate students that introduced them to quantum information science. It included a series of demonstrations and hands-on programming labs to show how quantum algorithms, when applied to specific problem domains, can outperform classical computers along with IBM Qiskit. It’s important to note we had almost equal participation of female and male students. Thank you to David Biersach and Mike McGuigan for developing and running this new program.

The Quantum Undergraduate Research at IBM and Princeton program is providing college students a unique opportunity to spend six weeks performing research at Princeton University in a variety of disciplines and six weeks working with IBM Quantum on cutting-edge translational research.

The Department of Energy summer internship programs is hosting a diverse group of 15 students related to the work of C2QA between Brookhaven Lab and Pacific Northwest National Lab.

We also will be hosting a career fair at the end of September to help increase the awareness of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science five National Quantum Information Science Research Centers and the open positions within these centers.
