The job of the operations leader in 2021 has shifted greatly due to a number of factors, most notably COVID-19. But the number-one goal of driving operational efficiency should still be at the forefront. The approach to navigating around today’s challenges calls for an experienced, passionate, technically savvy, communicative leader who understands the constraints of today and can still execute with intensity, laser-focus and a renewed commitment each day. Their eyes must be set on the day-to-day challenges, as well as anticipate the needs of and plan for the future.

C2QA at Brookhaven Lab has had to address this growing concern as Michael Bebon, the Center’s former Operations Manager announced his retirement effective July 31, 2021. With his impending retirement, Kimberly McGuire was hired to support the Center’s operational mission. She’s an experienced leader who’s built a fulfilling career by utilizing strategic thinking and a proactive, anticipative approach to leading teams.

Kim is a collaborative partner who delivers results. Over the past 15 years, she’s served in various operational and administrative roles spanning several industries (higher education, construction & engineering, consulting). Her experience as a driver of excellence is entrenched in the 3-P’s: People, Processes, and Programmatic Excellence. She has found success in her ability to identify, assess, recommend, implement and monitor strategies concerned with improving operational processes and organizational behavior.

C2QA—a multi-disciplinary, geographically dispersed team in its own right—will be well-served by Kim, as she is a true partner who brings depth of knowledge, skill and passion for optimization and relationship building. She holds a BS in Organizational Management from Nyack College, an MBA in Management from Long Island University, and is currently pursuing an MS in Systems Engineering from Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering.

Andrew Houck is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University and Director of the Princeton Quantum Initiative. His current research centers on quantum computing and quantum simulation with superconducting circuits. Specific projects include discovering and implementing novel qubits, materials for quantum information, and using graph theory to inform lattice design for building artificial quantum materials. He teaches quantum information and has helped developed a new series of freshman physics and math courses that significantly reduces the achievement gap among first year students. Houck serves as C2QA’s Deputy Director, and as Chair of the Division of Quantum Information at the American Physical Society.

Donna Cusa, Senior Administrative Assistant

Donna Cusa joined Brookhaven Lab in December 2020 and supports all administrative activities for the Energy & Photon Sciences (EPS) Growth Office and C2QA, consisting of stakeholders from national laboratories, universities, and industry partners. She is leveraged and contributes in the coordination of annual reviews, advisory board meetings, group meetings, publication processing, and the management and maintenance of the Center’s SharePoint site. She is available at dcusa@bnl.gov.

Prior to joining Brookhaven Lab she worked at Ernst & Young where she provided administrative support to c-suite executives and managed client relationships. Donna holds a BS in Management from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and an AS in Banking & Finance from Suffolk Community College.
