CFN News Stories

Awards and Honors

  • Percy Zahl won the 2012 George T. Hanyo Award from the American Vacuum Society for “outstanding performance in technical support of research or development in areas of interest to AVS.”
  • CFN user Stanislaus Wong was elected AAAS Fellow for his efforts to make carbon nanotubes for a wide range of applications and for his work in “green” nanostructure synthesis techniques.
  • CFN facilities and staff were featured heavily in New York State’s “Big Happen Here” national commercial campaign.

Safety Update

  • Work planning is a critical step in ensuring safe operations: without approval, and appropriate training, work cannot proceed. The scope of the work being planned should identify all the equipment, hazards, and mitigations. These are reviewed in an Experimental Safety Review (ESR), Safety Approval Form (SAF), or Prescribed Work Document.
  • Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are a critical component of experiment safety. MSDS can be found online at the CMS website or through Google.
  • Normal working hours for the CFN are between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, except on holidays. Work outside of these hours is only permissible if the Facility Leader approves the limited scope of work to be performed.
  • The CFN’s clean room reactive ion etcher uses some highly toxic gases, which are kept in gas cabinets with constant gas detection checking for leaks. In the event of a leak, a special temporal 3 alarm will sound throughout the CFN, and you will be instructed to exit the building through the north exits only and then proceed to the outdoor assembly area.
  • Additional safety information can be found under the “Operations” tab on the CFN homepage. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact either Bob Sabatini at 631-344-3509, sabatini@bnl.gov, or Lorraine Davis at 631-344-4156, ldavis@bnl.gov.
