Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council
Mission
Activities of the Council focus on recruitment, education, outreach, staff life, coordination, and communication with the goal of developing a psychologically safe and respectful environment for all at BSD. We measure our impact based on the specific activities defined yearly by this Council. This mission aligns with the DEI initiatives of the Department of Energy and Brookhaven National Lab and supports the objective of fostering a diverse and inclusive research environment. This Charter (PDF) outlines the logistical procedures of the Council, with specific strategies and items to be voted on.
Vision
BSD will continue to enrich the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion culture within Brookhaven National Laboratory. The BSD DEI Council will perform activities and advise on policies that sustain a diverse, talented, and collaborative BSD workforce, establishing itself as a dynamic, creative, and engaged cross-functional organization.
Diversity
Diversity is difference in individual attributes like national origin, race, disability, gender, age, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, veteran status, and family structure.
Equity
An equitable work environment gives everyone access to the same opportunities. Support for equity acknowledges that people start out with different advantages and seeks to eliminate barriers to success.
Inclusion
Inclusion is the act of connecting employees to the workplace by encouraging collaboration and fairness so that everyone feels they can participate and contribute to their full potential.
