Awards Received by BNL Neutrino and Nuclear Chemistry Group Participations
Breakthrough Prize 2016
In 2016, five experiments conducting research on the subtle transformations of ghostlike subatomic neutrinos have been awarded the Breakthrough Prize in fundamental physics. The $3 million award have shared equally among researchers from Daya Bay, KamLAND, K2K/T2K, Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO), and Super-Kamiokande (Super-K). Researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory have made important contributions to the work at several of these experiments. The BNL Chemistry Division NNC group had a large involvement in the Daya Bay collaboration and in the SNO collaboration.
The breakthrough prize was founded in 2012 by a group of Silicon Valley innovators Sergey Brin (Google) and Anne Wojcicki (23andMe), Jack Ma (Alibaba) and Cathy Zhang, Yuri Milner (DST Global) and Julia Milner, and Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) and Priscilla Chan. The Breakthrough Prize has been honoring those at the forefront of the fundamental physics, life sciences and mathematics fields, while also aiming to inspire innovators in these fields for the future.

Nobel Prize in Physics 2015
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2015 was awarded jointly to Takaaki Kajita (SK collaboration) and Arthur B. McDonald (SNO collaboration) "for the discovery of neutrino oscillations, which shows that neutrinos have mass."
The Standard Model used by modern physics has three types of a very small and elusive particle called the neutrino. In an experimental facility in a mine in Canada in 2000, Arthur McDonald studied neutrinos created in nuclear reactions in the sun.
Measurements showed deviations, which were explained by the neutrinos switching between the different types (flavors). This means that they must have mass. The Standard Model, however, is based on neutrinos lacking mass and the model must be revised.

Nobel Prize in Physics 2002
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2002 was divided, one half jointly to Raymond Davis Jr. and Masatoshi Koshiba "for pioneering contributions to astrophysics, in particular for the detection of cosmic neutrinos"
Raymond Davis (Homestead experiment) was the first scientist to detect solar neutrinos, the signature of nuclear fusion reactions occurring in the core of the sun. Devising a method to detect solar neutrinos based on the theory that the elusive particles produce radioactive argon when they interact with a chlorine nucleus.
Davis consistently found only one-third of the neutrinos that standard theories predicted. His results threw the field of astrophysics into an uproar, and, for nearly three decades, physicists tried to resolve the so-called "solar neutrino puzzle."
