Absence Management

Brookhaven Science Associates recognizes that you may need time off from work due to your own or a family member's illness or injury, birth or adoption of a child, or bonding with a child. The information on this site will help you to understand the benefits you may be eligible to receive and the process to obtain them.

FMLA

Family and Medical Leave may be granted to eligible employees for the employee's own illness or injury, to care for an ill spouse (or significant other sharing a residence), child or parent, for the birth or adoption of a child or placement of a child into the employee's home for foster care, or for certain exigent circumstances.

Paid Parental Leave

Eligible employees may receive up to six weeks of paid time off to care for a child following birth or adoption.

NYS Paid Family Leave

Eligible employees may receive paid time off to care for a family member who has a serious health condition, for bonding with a child after birth, adoption or foster placement, or for a qualified emergency under FMLA related to active military duty.

Vacation Donation
for Serious Ilness

Eligible employees who have exhausted all available BSA paid time off may request the donation of vacation time from other employees for their own illness or injury, or to care for an ill spouse, child or parent.

Workers' Compensation

Eligible employees may receive cash benefit payments and/or medical care if they become ill or are injured as a direct result of their employment.

Long Term Disability

Eligible employees may receive protection against complete loss of income during a long period of absence because of a disabling illness or injury.

Vacation Donation
for Disaster Relief

Donate vacation time to an employee who has been adversely affected by a major disaster declared by the President of the United States.

Sick Leave and Sick Family Member Benefits

As you accrue sick leave, you may use such sick leave to receive paid time off if you are unable to work due to illness or need to care for a sick family member.

New York State Disability Insurance

You may may be eligible to receive a monthly benefit if you are unable to work due to your own own illness or injury that did not arise out of, or in the course of, employment.
