Environmental Information Management System (EISM)

The mission of the Environmental Information Management System (EIMS) is to store, manage, verify, protect, retrieve and archive Brookhaven National Laboratory's (BNL) environmental data. The EIMS stores data in a database and a Geographic Information System (GIS). The goal of all EIMS activities is to ensure the highest level of quality of these data and to provide timely access by its stakeholders. The EIMS supports the Environmental Restoration program, the Environmental Protection Division and other BNL departments and divisions that provide or use environmental data about the Laboratory.

Group Functions

The EIMS maintains a database containing analytical results and associated information from BNL's environmental sampling programs. Applications are available to users to query, display, export and print data as well as several data management utilities, including a Sample Tracking System that tracks samples from the time of sampling through receipt, ingest, and validation of results.

The GIS database contains geospatial information about BNL and its environmental surveillance, compliance, and remediation efforts. The GIS services include paper maps and web applications for interactive spatial queries and mapping.

Several support functions include technical data entry and documentation, data verification and validation, system hardware and software administration, and cyber security.

Land Use and Institutional Controls

Land Use and Institutional Controls - The purpose of this website is to provide centralized, integrated access to information pertaining to BNL remediation areas that are subject to land use and institutional controls. It includes brief information on each of the BNL contaminated sites and facilities, their cleanup status, contaminants or concern, and maps depicting land use and land use restrictions.

It defines the scope of activities intended within each contaminated area, so that stewards and stakeholders have a clear understanding of restrictions and stewardship responsibilities. This website replaces what was informally referred to at BNL as the "soil contamination map".
