General Lab Information

Committees and Councils

Brookhaven Lab’s vision is to create and advance an inclusive environment that embraces a diverse workforce, ensuring it is well positioned to attract and retain the talent needed to achieve the DOE Office of Science mission. A workplace that values a diversity of people, ideas, cultures, and educational backgrounds is foundational to delivering on the Brookhaven and Office of Science missions.

Leadership responsibility for developing and implementing strategies and initiatives for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) flows from the Laboratory Director and the Associate Lab Directors, across the remainder of Level 1 and Level 2 management. The Lab has also developed cross-functional DE&I councils and committees throughout its operations to effectively advance DE&I efforts at central and local levels.

Directorate DE&I Councils

How DE&I Committees and Councils are Organized

Executive Council for DE&I

The Executive Council is responsible for implementing a Lab-wide DE&I strategy by reducing silos, integrating inter-disciplinary work teams, and championing structural improvements to process and procedures. The Executive Council interacts regularly with a Management Steering Committee and an External Advisory Board, as defined in the figure below. The Executive Council is comprised of the Laboratory Director, the DE&I Office Manager, the Deputy Director for Science & Technology, the Deputy Director for Operations, a rotating representation of the science Associate Laboratory Directors (ALDs), the Director for the Office of Stakeholder & Community Relations, and an employee representative from the Office of Educational Programs.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Advisory/Functional Structure

Management Steering Committee

A clearing house for ideas, the Management Steering Committee consists of the Executive Council, all ALDs, and the employee resource group (ERG) leaders. The Management Steering Committee meets quarterly to discuss progress, issues, and policies, and to align Lab and directorate-level policies. These meetings provide leadership with valuable feedback and opportunities to create strategies for implementing change at all levels of the organization.

Directorate DE&I Councils

Directorate-level DE&I Councils have been established within directorates to help ALDs solve challenges incorporating DE&I into directorate management practices. This includes developing and implementing strategies for hiring and retaining a diverse workforce consistent with Lab policies.

External Advisory Board

The External Advisory Board includes leaders from organizations such Con Edison, IBM, Stony Brook University, CUNY-Medgar Evers College, New York University, and Stanford University. Lab leadership works with the External Advisory Board to share best practices and receive valuable feedback and recommendations.
