The Council's mission is to attract, advance, and retain an inclusive and diverse (I&D) workforce that is representative of the pool of candidates and to promote a respectful and supportive workplace where people of all identities (e.g., gender, race, sexual orientation, age, cultural background) and experiences are welcomed and integrated, so that everyone may contribute their talent and unique input to the Nuclear & Particle Physics (NPP) directorate and, by extension, to the mission of the Laboratory.

The Council's role is to advise and support the Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for the NPP directorate in developing and implementing I&D initiatives to improve the overall culture of NPP.

On Current Events and Inclusion, Diversity and Equity

NPP envisions a world where every person feels safe, free from oppression, and has the tools to thrive. We stand in solidarity with everyone who believes that a just and fair society is a fundamental right, not a privilege. More...

An inclusive community is one where all people are treated with dignity and respect, and are valued for their strengths and the contributions they have to offer. One that includes all voices and perspectives, and recognizes that while different backgrounds and points of view challenge us and make us uncomfortable at times, they also make us stronger and help ensure our communities work for everyone. One that fully upholds equity and justice for all, including people of color and other marginalized communities.

NPP condemns racism, violence, and other acts of injustice, as they stand in stark contrast to our strong belief in diversity, inclusion and respect for others. NPP has and will continue to support Inclusion, Diversity and Equity. We have supported the African School of Physics (ASP) by hosting students from various regions in Africa, sponsored the Black Physicists Conference and provided funding to the AAAG scholarships program for minority high-school students. The council will engage in discussions among us and with others to determine how we can continue to help.

Similar to the lab's safety policy, we strongly encourage you to say something if you see and/or experience discrimination of any kind.

If you need help or someone to talk to, don’t hesitate to reach out to any member of the NPP I&D Council or our Peer Counselors.

Let us know if there’s anything else we can do.
